Mission Statement
The New York State Human Rights
Initiative is a project of the Duchesne Center at Manhattanville College
established to facilitate the protection of human rights within the State
of New York through research, outreach and the development of partnerships
within the community.
Dear
Friends:
Thank you for
visiting our site and taking the time to learn more about the New York
State Human Rights Initiative (NYSHRI). Recently established, the NYSHRI
is a project of the Duchesne Center for Religion and Social Justice at
Manhattanville College established to facilitate the protection of human
rights within the State of New York through research, outreach and the
development of partnerships within the community. The protection of human
rights is of the utmost importance internationally as well as within the
United States of America. In addition to Federal laws endeavoring to
protect human rights, several laws have been passed by the State of New
York and it’s instrumentalities dealing with human rights.
The initial
goal of the NYSHRI is to compile and analyze data regarding the human
rights laws currently existing in the State of New York to determine if
these laws are being implemented effectively. Following this research and
analysis, the NYSHRI will issue a report of it’s findings to policy
makers and other interest holders. The NYSHRI will further utilize this
data to develop an online clearinghouse of human rights data to assist in
the public in accessing this information. In an effort to ensure the
effectiveness of the NYSHRI, an Advisory Board has been established
consisting of scholars, academics, attorneys and human rights activists to
assist the staff of the NYSHRI. Again, thank you for your interest in the
NYSHRI.
